Chapter 7

Grunagg

I knew, more or less, what she was asking. I just wanted to pretend like I didn't.

She wants to learn how to be self-sufficient, how to survive on her own. I should be more than happy to show her, because the sooner she can get on without me, the sooner she'll leave.

Instead, I clam up. I've gotten so used to her being here. Now I pick another half a portion from the garden, and I cook bigger meals so she can eat, too. And there's the part where she figured out how to take me with her mouth, one of the the greatest gifts anyone has ever bestowed on me. You lick an ogress to get her excited and ready for you, that’s just the way of things. There's no need to suck on a cock when it's already firm and eager to please. Yet she did it for me, and I've never felt anything as marvelous.

I wonder if her beautiful little cunt would feel even better.

Not that I can entertain those thoughts. I don't know what would compel Ah-lee-ya to spread her legs that way for me. Perhaps, a darker thought says to me, she's only been trying to pay me back for caring for her.

That idea hurts more than any other.

What I didn't expect was for her to invite herself along on my hunt. It's difficult enough as it is to find prey, and her stomping around through the woods won't make it easier. But she's determined, and I'm finding that stubbornness of hers is inextricable from who she is.

So we set off early, heading towards the forest. If we don't turn up anything, I always have the second option of trying to catch a fish. It's not easy, but it's doable, especially at the right part of the creek.

The only problem is that bears also know my spot, and the last thing I need is for Ah-lee-ya to get hurt again.

When she cracks twigs under her feet, I stop her and show her how to walk with just the ball of her foot, so there's less chance of crunching something. We practice walking quietly, and she catches on surprisingly quick. Once she's got the hang of it, we dive deeper into the woods.

Hours pass without so much as a sign of a wolf. Little birds sing high up in the trees, but none of them are big enough to eat. I need to find something today, or we won't have much for dinner besides some berries that are starting to soften.

Suddenly, I hear Ah-lee-ya hiss quietly at me. "Grunagg." She points through the trees. "Look."

I follow the path of her finger and notice the rear end of a deer, its tail flicking back and forth. I've only seen two in the last month, and both times they got away. I can’t let this one escape.

I pull my bow off my shoulder, and gesture at her with my chin to stay put. She scowls. I get closer to the deer, watching my step carefully so I don't make any sound.
